The Best Green Supplement Powders in Australia

Eat Your Greens….I say let us drink them instead!

We all heard this as children and I now find myself repeating this phrase as a mum to my kids and as a Naturopath to my clients… Let us talk about why they should be incorporated into your day and why I prefer to drink my greens in powder form. While 'eating' your greens is still best, reaching a sufficient daily consumption simply may not be an option for everyone. Incorporating a daily scoop of a super-green blend is a wonderful supplement to ensure you reap the nutritional benefits.

Collectively whether it be leafy greens, barley grass, spirulina, wheatgrass or even a super-green blend, no one can deny their amazing nutritional profile as they are a phytonutrient powerhouse packed with vitamins and minerals associated with maintaining optimal cell function in the body. The high antioxidant profile of these super-greens has many long- term health benefits. Most importantly, they assist with healthy aging by mopping up free radicals and reducing inflammation, a prerequisite to chronic disease.

Chlorophyll is the pigment that produces those various shades of green and its biochemical structure is similar to that of our haemoglobin, the protein in our red blood cells that is responsible for the transport of oxygen throughout the body. The difference being chlorophyll holds magnesium whereas haemoglobin contains iron.

Greens are also high in fibre and prebiotics for optimal gut health with the added bonus of glowing and healthy skin.

The nutritional profile of greens that makes them a dietary must to support our body’s energy levels, immune function and natural detoxification is quite the long list:

  • Vitamin A- immune function, healthy vision, reproductive function and mucous membrane support.
  • Vitamin C- immune function, collagen formation, wound healing and iron absorption.
  • Vitamin K- blood coagulation and bone health
  • Magnesium- 306 enzyme functions including muscle function, energy production and nerve factors.
  • Calcium- dental health, bone health and cardiovascular health.
  • Iron- transport of oxygen, enzyme and immune system function.
  • Potassium- nerve response, kidney function & heart support.
  • Selenium-thyroid health, oxidative stress & immune function.
  • Iodine- thyroid function and foetal neuro-development.
  • Chromium- blood sugar regulation and cholesterol functions.

The added convenience of just adding powder to water or juice makes drinking your greens perfect for anyone that is time poor, this is why I embrace a greens powder into my daily regime, so no excuses!

My favourites from Wholesome include:

Vital-All-In-One: an organic multi-vitamin powder that I recommend regularly with its 78 vital ingredients. The recommended two teaspoon dose of super healthy convenience makes this formula a long-time favourite of mine, and especially for those that are fussy eaters. This powder, developed by Naturopaths, is not just a green blend, it contains herbs, probiotics and essential fatty acids making its nutritional profile nutritionally all inclusive.

Tropeaka Superfood Greens + D: an organic supergreen blend with the added vitamin D coming from a mushroom source is a great combination for winter immunity or for those not meeting their quota of daily sunshine.  Their superfood blend packed with superfood ingredients and their commitment to helping millions of people around the world with their health through The Tropaeka Foundation provides even more motive to add this greens powder to your shopping cart.

Tropeaka Spirulina: I love spirulina as it provides an amazing nutrient dense profile that provides an energy boost for the day or a dose for that afternoon slump.  It is grown in a certified organic environment using springs of pure water to produce an Australian certified organic powder that is extremely well priced when compared to other spirulina products on the market.

Melrose Essential Greens: developed by an Australian, family-owned brand that has been obsessing over natural ingredients for more than 40 years,  this phytonutrient powerhouse powder contains the big four - barley grass, wheatgrass, chlorella and spirulina, promising an extremely high chlorophyll content. With its natural lime flavour, it makes for a very palatable and convenient just-add-water formulation.

These are just four of my favourite Australian super green powders with many more on offer that contain fabulous formulations. I love a good green powder for its convenience and nutritional value and it is something I embrace every day. So if you aren’t one to ‘eat your greens’, alternatively drink them instead!
