Maqui (Chilean wineberry) is a sweet/tart berry that grows in the remote and wild region of Patagonia at the tip of South America. Its exceptionally deep purple colour is due to its high levels of the powerful antioxidant anthocyanin; in fact, maqui is thought to have the highest antioxidant content of any fruit. The indigenous Mapuche people have traditionally used maqui for a variety of medicinal purposes, including treatment of fever, sore throat, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids and ulcers. Aside from its antioxidant properties, anthocyanin is an effective anticoagulant and cholesterol regulator.
